Cenni Storici
Il toponimo ha le sue radici nel ligure arcaico gaba, altura, e San, luogo, quindi luogo su un altura.
L'abitato sorse sul colle sovrastante la romana Via Postumia. La prima notizia certa risale al 1242.
Il paese fece parte ab antiquo del cosiddetto Vescovato, storico possedimento temporale del primate di Tortona.
Il 18 giugno 1799 il borgo fu saccheggiato dai soldati francesi del generale Moreau che lasciarono sulla strada alcune vittime.
Nel maggio del 1859 fu ancora teatro operativo di truppe francesi prossime a scontrarsi con gli Austriaci a Montebello.
Nel 1874 vi nacque il venerabile don Carlo Sterpi cofondatore col futuro San Luigi Orione della Piccola Opera del la Divina Provvidenza; nel 1943 egli ospitò nella sua casa il celebre scultore Arrigo Minerbi, sottraendolo alle persecuzioni razziali.

The roots of the name go back to the archaic Ligurian gaba - hill, and san - place, so place on a hill.
The township arose on the hill above the Roman Via Postumia. The first certain information dates back to 1242.
In ancient times the town was part of the so-called Bishopric, historical possession in time of the primate of Tortona.
On 18 June 1799 the village was sacked by the French soidiers of general Moreau who left some victims on the road.
In May 1859 it was once again the operational stage of French troops about to battle with the Austrians in Montebello.
In 1874, the venerable don Carlo Sterpi was born there; he is cofounder, with the future San Luigi Orione of the Small Work of Divine Providence; in 1943 he hosted Arrigo Minerbi the famous sculptor there, removing him of rational persecutions.
